Derek
Moye was a four-sport standout at Rochester, earning a
letter in baseball, three letters in football, four
letters in track, and four letters in basketball.
In 2007, Derek won gold in the 200m and
400m at the PIAA 2A Track and Field championship and was
named to the All-Star basketball second team by the
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
In football, Derek made the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's
Fabulous 22, was named first-team All-WPIAL, second-team
All-State, and first-team All-State, and played in the
Big 33 Football Classic. Derek and the Rams won the
WPIAL 1A championship in 2004 under Beaver County Sports
Hall of Fame football coach Gene Matsook.
After a redshirt freshman year, Derek
played wide receiver at Penn State from 2008 through
2011, finishing with 144 receptions for 2,395 yards
(16.6 average) and 18 touchdowns. Derek served as a team
captain his senior year, and his career receiving yards
were third-best for the Nittany Lions at the time and
currently ranks seventh all-time. In 2010, Derek was
named to the Honorable Mention All-Big Ten Conference
football teams by both the conference coaches and the
conference media.
In 2012, 6'-5" Derek signed as an
undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins and was
later claimed off waivers by the New Orleans Saints and
then signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers to their practice
squad. In 2013, Derek led the Steelers in preseason
receiving with 10 catches for 149 yards and, during the
regular season for the Steelers as a wide receiver,
compiled 2 catches for 20 yards, including a touchdown
pass from Ben Roethlisberger. Derek signed with the
Tennessee Titans in October 2014.
After the NFL, Derek opened a
speed-training business in Cranberry Township, PA. He
served as a wide receivers coach for Aliquippa High
School in 2018. Derek was head football coach for
Western Beaver High School in 2019, helping turn the
Golden Beavers around, from 3-7 in 2018 to 7-3 in 2019.
Over the years, Derek has participated
in many community events, such as the Lift for Life
Challenge in college for kidney cancer research,
visiting Saint Thomas Health Midtown Hospital as a
Tennessee Titan, playing in a charity golf tournament at
Penn State, and playing around the Pittsburgh region
with the Ballers basketball team of Steelers players and
alumni to help raise money for various causes.
Derek is cousin to Beaver County
Sports Hall of Famer Rocky Washington. Derek lives in
Rochester, NY, has a nine-year-old daughter Lilliana,
and works for Rochester Prep Elementary School, teaching
K-4 physical education.
