In football, Derek made the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Fabulous 22, was named first-team All-WPIAL, second-team All-State, and first-team All-State, and played in the Big 33 Football Classic. Derek and the Rams won the WPIAL 1A championship in 2004 under Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame football coach Gene Matsook.

After a redshirt freshman year, Derek played wide receiver at Penn State from 2008 through 2011, finishing with 144 receptions for 2,395 yards (16.6 average) and 18 touchdowns. Derek served as a team captain his senior year, and his career receiving yards were third-best for the Nittany Lions at the time and currently ranks seventh all-time. In 2010, Derek was named to the Honorable Mention All-Big Ten Conference football teams by both the conference coaches and the conference media.

In 2012, 6'-5" Derek signed as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins and was later claimed off waivers by the New Orleans Saints and then signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers to their practice squad. In 2013, Derek led the Steelers in preseason receiving with 10 catches for 149 yards and, during the regular season for the Steelers as a wide receiver, compiled 2 catches for 20 yards, including a touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger. Derek signed with the Tennessee Titans in October 2014.

After the NFL, Derek opened a speed-training business in Cranberry Township, PA. He served as a wide receivers coach for Aliquippa High School in 2018. Derek was head football coach for Western Beaver High School in 2019, helping turn the Golden Beavers around, from 3-7 in 2018 to 7-3 in 2019.

Over the years, Derek has participated in many community events, such as the Lift for Life Challenge in college for kidney cancer research, visiting Saint Thomas Health Midtown Hospital as a Tennessee Titan, playing in a charity golf tournament at Penn State, and playing around the Pittsburgh region with the Ballers basketball team of Steelers players and alumni to help raise money for various causes.

Derek is cousin to Beaver County Sports Hall of Famer Rocky Washington. Derek lives in Rochester, NY, has a nine-year-old daughter Lilliana, and works for Rochester Prep Elementary School, teaching K-4 physical education.
