Joe Ursida

Coaching ∙ New Brighton

Joe Ursida graduated from Beaver Falls High School in 1964 and from Geneva College in 1968 with a degree in business education and was the Golden Tornadoes co-captain his senior year. Joe started his coaching career at Beaver Falls Junior High School with Karl Florie, and then after a seven year stint at Seneca Valley, Joe went to New Brighton in 1977 and became head coach in 1990. In 1994, his Lions won their first WPIAL title since 1951, with a 13-1 overall record and the school’s first undefeated (10-0) regular season, which earned Joe Coach of the Year honors. Joe started coaching softball in 1980 and made New Brighton a yearly contender: his teams won six section titles and were runners-up nine other times. At the start of the 2004 season, Joe was the winningest softball coach in Beaver County, with a 377-149 record. In 2002, Joe was selected one of the Top 100 Geneva College football players from 1950 to 1975 and was inducted into the New Brighton Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. He is the only person to be coached by, coached with, and coached against Larry Bruno.
