Herb Lake

Midland ∙ Basketball

The lengthy list of outstanding Midland basketball players includes Norm Van Lier, Sim Hill, Stan Yukica, and Nick Aloi, but the athlete who set Midland's single game scoring record is Herb Lake. During his senior season, 6'-5" Herb scored 53 points in a 101-46 win over Mars and  was a unanimous selection on the Section 8 All Star Team and third team All State. After graduating from Midland in 1955, Herb moved on to Youngstown State University on a basketball scholarship, where he earned second team All American honors as a senior and ranked second in the country in rebounds. Herb set three rebounding records at Youngstown State: single game (33), single season (555), and career (1783). During his Youngstown State career, Herb helped the Penguins to a 77-34 record and three trips to the NAIA Tournament.
